GetUp! are running a campaign to encourage Senator Steven Fielding to vote for a Bill that will reverse the stupid changes the Howard government made to the electoral system. Basically, they changed it so that once an election is called, Australians eligible to vote have only until 8pm that day to enrol/register to vote. It used to be 7 days. And the current bill is proposing it go back to that system.

Some of you may know about this already but I think it's an important campaign. It only takes a couple of moments to bash out a quick email to Steve Fielding, via the GetUp! site, or you could email or phone him directly. His vote is crucial on this issue.

From the GetUp site:
Here are some talking points you may find helpful for your phone call:
# This Wednesday, Steven Fielding has the deciding vote on whether Australians will have a week to get on the electoral roll, or just hours after an election is called.

# Hundreds of thousands of Australians may miss their chance to vote this year - over 5 electorates worth!

# The AEC tells us that in 2007 only 17,208 Australians enroled or updated their details by 8pm on the day election writs were issued (which could be the deadline this year) - compared to 423,975 in the old 7 day period in 2004.

# Those most affected by this are Australians who move house often, or don’t have drivers’ licenses: young families, Indigenous, migrant and poorer Australians.

# The Australian Electoral Commission have argued that these changes will better allow them to do their job of maintaining the electoral roll.

I don't really understand the reasons the Howard government had for changing it in the first place. I can only think that they wanted to deliberately exclude those mostly likely to be affected by this. What other reason could there be?

The details about the bill:
Tonight the Senate will debate the Electoral and Referendum Amendment (Close of Rolls and Other Measures) Bill 2010. There are 6 schedules in the bill, but the most controversial and important is Schedule 1. Schedule 1 will allow Australians to enrol to vote, or change their enrolment details (address etc.) 7 days after the election writs are issued (usually the day the election is called), rather than by 8pm on that day. The Opposition is against Schedule 1, but the Greens, Independent Senator Nick Xenophon, and the Government are for. If Steve Fielding announces he is for schedule 1, it will be possible to amend and pass the bill - if he is against, the whole bill will almost certainly fail.

I urge you to follow this link and send a quick email to Senator Fielding.

Did you know Australia is one of only two developed countries without paid maternity leave? That's why I've joined the campaign to deliver Australia a paid parental leave scheme in this year's Budget.

The Productivity Commission has reported and the evidence is in: government-funded paid parental leave is good for babies, good for parents and good for the economy. But the decision on whether to include paid parental leave in this year's budget sits on a knife’s edge.

Can you add your name to mine in supporting this campaign? Click HERE to sign the petition telling the Government this delivery is overdue.

We are way behind international standards in paid parental leave, and it's high time we got with the program.

The Government is set to pull back from it's earlier commitments under the pretext of the global financial crisis - but that excuse simply doesn't stand up. Paid parental leave has proven economic benefits. It will stimulate the economy, retain parents in the workforce, and safeguard the nation's future prosperity.

Decisions are being made right now about this year's Budget. We need to act quickly and decisively - if you and I don't push them on this issue, the Government will have no reason to act. Can you join me in the push?

Did you know the Government is proposing an internet censorship scheme that goes further than any other democracy in the world?

I've just signed a petition to prevent the scheme that will make the internet up to 86% slower, more expensive, accidentally block up to one in 12 legitimate sites, will miss the vast majority of inappropriate content and is very easily sidestepped. The government of the day may add any ‘unwanted’ site to a secret blacklist under the scheme.

Our Government should be doing all in its power to take Australia into the 21st century economy, and to protect our children. This proposed internet censorship does neither. Can you join me and take action on the net today to save the net?

If you haven't already, go and sign the petition to help fight for equal rights for gay couples.

Last year you joined tens of thousands of GetUp members to tell our politicians the time to end same s-x* discrimination had come. The call to grant same s-x* couples the same legal rights as de facto couples echoed around the country.

Finally, after more than a year of intense lobbying, the Senate will debate laws tomorrow that remove this outdated discrimination.

The latest word from Canberra is that some politicians who want to keep this discrimination will stall the bill once again with amendments. That's why we'll be walking the halls of Parliament with your petition in hand to convince our pollies to get the job done.

We need to make sure this petition is as large as possible. We'll be carrying it with us to convince those wavering on the issue to vote to end discrimination now. Can you ask your friends to add their name to yours?

www.getup.org.au/campaign/EqualBeforeTheLaw/408

Those politicians who want to keep the discrimination, or water it down with amendments meaning same s-x couples will not be entirely equal before the law, need to know the community demands an immediate end to this unfairness. This petition will send that message - that now is the time to write this discrimination out of our laws.

When the weight of public opinion is effectively expressed, politicians will follow. That's why we've been busy behind the scenes on this issue, liaising with key decision makers, writing letters to every MP and Senator and visiting politicians face-to-face to take your concerns directly to Canberra. Now it's time for our final push.

We need every last signature to convince the remaining doubters that no excuses remain for not wiping this discrimination off the books. Will you encourage your friends to add their name to the final figure we present to politicians before they vote? Their signature could be the difference:

We know there is majority support for equal rights extending across every demographic, across every region, across every political party in the nation. Tell the politicians it's time they caught up to the people that voted them in.

Tomorrow, with your help, we can travel further down the path to greater equality.

Thanks for being a part of this,
The GetUp team

PS - Join over 70% of Australians, and every State and Territory, in supporting an end to discrimination against same s-x couples. Click here to help build this petition to ensure Australians aren't treated like second-class citizens purely on the basis of their s-xual orientation.

Did you know Australia is one of only two developed countries without paid maternity leave?

I don't think that's acceptable, so I've just joined the campaign supporting a 6-12 month standard for paid parental leave. Living in the lucky country should mean that our children get the best possible start in life, and our leaders need to safeguard our nation's future prosperity by ensuring that we retain people in the workforce.

We are way behind international standards in paid parental leave, and it's high time we got with the program. The government is looking into this issue right now, so we must act quickly to make an impact for the benefit of our children, our families and our nation.

Will you join me in setting the standard?

For every $1 earned by men in Australia today, women earn just 84c.

Equal pay for women a battle

GetUp has a new campaign: Equal Pay for Women

Radical, huh?

Tomorrow in the city is a march for International Women's Day. I can't go because I'm running and then breakfasting, but I'll be there in spirit.
